A relocation budget fails when it begins with a headline percentage. A useful budget begins with the same unit in every city, keeps each local currency visible and records when the observation was collected.

Method before numbers

This comparison uses eight defined planning categories for Florianópolis, Miami, London, Berlin and Milan:

  1. monthly asking rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the centre;
  2. monthly asking rent for a one-bedroom apartment outside the centre;
  3. one litre of regular milk as a narrow grocery marker;
  4. one meal in Numbeo’s “inexpensive restaurant” category;
  5. monthly basic utilities for an 85 m² apartment;
  6. monthly broadband internet at 60 Mbps or higher;
  7. a private-health planning checkpoint rather than a fabricated average premium;
  8. one named local-transport product.

The six consumer-price categories use dated Numbeo pages: Florianópolis, updated 11 July 2026, Miami, updated 5 June 2026, London, updated 14 July 2026, Berlin, updated 15 July 2026 and Milan, updated 15 July 2026. Numbeo describes user-editable city pages; these are contributor-supplied observations, not official statistics or achieved-contract databases.

Each rent row remains a rent row. This guide does not combine sale values, mortgage costs or acquisition taxes with monthly housing. Each city remains in BRL, USD, GBP or EUR: there is no currency conversion in the dataset.

Dated comparison snapshot

The structured table following this article contains 40 observations: eight categories for each of the five cities. Read the period and context column with the value. Decimal places reproduce the source observation; they are not a claim that a future bill can be forecast to the cent.

For transport, a named product is more honest than a generic average. The July 2026 checks use the Florianópolis conventional single fare, Miami-Dade’s regular Metrobus/Metrorail fare, a Transport for London single bus journey, BVG’s Berlin AB single-ticket catalogue and ATM’s Mi1–Mi3 urban ticket. They are orientation products, not identical networks or journey lengths.

Why health is a checkpoint, not an average

A private-health premium cannot be normalised across these cities without inventing a person and a policy. Age, eligibility, underwriting, household, benefits, network, deductible and public-system position all matter.

The table therefore says quote required and points to the relevant planning entry point: Brazil’s ANS beneficiary checklist, the US government’s 2026 Marketplace estimator, the UK’s MoneyHelper private-medical guide, Germany’s federal health-insurance overview and Italy’s IVASS consumer-verification portal. A premium-only comparison would also hide deductibles, co-payments, exclusions and provider networks.

Build the Florianópolis budget from an address

“Florianópolis” contains different routines. A central apartment, a beach district and a lower-density southern address can produce different rent, car use, delivery, maintenance and travel patterns. Ask for address-specific evidence:

  • a current lease proposal and included charges;
  • electricity, water, gas and internet bills from a comparable occupancy pattern;
  • insurance and health-plan quotations in the applicant’s actual profile;
  • recurring routes at the hours they will be travelled;
  • condominium, garden, pool or coastal-maintenance costs where relevant;
  • annual costs divided into monthly reserves, rather than omitted.

Seasonality can affect short-stay accommodation and tourist-area spending. Do not project a holiday booking into a long-term lease assumption, or a city-centre average into Pântano do Sul or Açores.

Income currency changes the answer

A household earning in BRL has a different risk from one spending BRL while earning USD, GBP or EUR. Foreign-currency income can make the same local invoice feel lower today, but exchange rates can move in both directions. Transfer charges, tax residence, banking access and timing also affect usable cash.

Keep three columns in the personal model: the local BRL obligation, the dated conversion used for planning, and a stress case chosen with a qualified adviser. Do not present one favourable spot rate as a permanent cost advantage.

Evidence limitations and budgeting boundary

This is a cross-city orientation dataset, not a consumer price index, salary comparison, investment return or complete household budget. Contributor counts and observed prices change. Product availability, taxes, tips, billing inclusions and housing definitions differ between countries.

Recheck every material cost before committing to a move and retain the observation date. This is budgeting information, not personal financial advice.

Structured comparison

Relocation cost signals in five cities — observed June–July 2026

A dated orientation set, not a cost-of-living index or household total. It preserves local currencies and fixed units, with no currency conversion. Housing rows are monthly one-bedroom rents only; sale values are excluded. Food uses one litre of regular milk and one inexpensive restaurant meal. Utilities use Numbeo’s 85 m² apartment definition and internet uses 60 Mbps or higher. Numbeo observations are contributor-supplied and can move with its sample. Transport uses a named operator product. Private-health rows deliberately require an individual quote because age, status, coverage, network and deductible prevent a defensible citywide premium.

Questions international buyers ask

Frequently asked questions

Is Florianópolis cheaper than Miami, London, Berlin or Milan?

Selected local-price observations are lower, especially when read in their own currencies, but no citywide table can establish your household total. Housing location, income currency, healthcare, travel and consumption pattern can reverse the practical result.

Does this table convert every city into US dollars?

No. It preserves BRL, USD, GBP and EUR to avoid an exchange-rate snapshot looking like a permanent price relationship. Convert your own cash flow with a dated rate and a separate exchange-rate buffer.

Are the housing figures property prices?

No. Both housing rows are contributor-supplied monthly asking-rent indications for a one-bedroom apartment. Sale values, transaction costs and the Casas Açores asking price are outside this dataset.
